Tear Trough Fillers – Dr Natasha’s guide to treatment

Here in the first of a series of special blogs, we are giving an overview of some of our most requested, and popular treatments. Starting with Tear Trough Fillers, our aim is to answer all of the common questions we get asked and to give you as much useful information as possible, before any cosmetic treatment occurs.

Where is the tear trough?

The tear trough is a very specific area of the upper face, located between the cheek and lower eyelid.

Why would I consider the treatment and what are the benefits I could expect?

Naturally as we get older, we can lose volume in this area. Ageing (and the lack of volume) can result in dark circles appearing under the eye, and/or the appearance of hollowness and eye bags.

The benefits to this procedure include an increase in volume of the tear trough area, which in turn reduces the appearance of dark circles, fine lines and hollowness. This of course translates into a boost in self-confidence.

The fillers themselves are temporary and non-invasive, there is minimal downtime and you get instant results.

What should I expect during the procedure?

Firstly, we will take a photo in order for us to compare the area before and after the procedure. The area will be cleaned. If required Dr Natasha will then apply a very mild anaesthetic, which will be left for 20-30 minutes. Often this is not required and if so, the procedure can start. We will insert a very thin needle and inject filler under the skin, in small amounts. This is then gently massaged to ensure even distribution and a natural look. After this we assess how the procedure has gone and take an ‘after’ photo.

How does the treatment work?

Where there is a loss of volume, the treatment fills the space, which improves the look of folds, darkness, and wrinkles. It also has a biological effect on your own hyaluronic acid by encouraging it to increase collagen and elastin production, which in turn improves skin integrity and quality. Overall, this combines to promote a natural and youthful appearance.

What product do we use?

Aliaxin® and MaiLi® are the fillers we tend to use. All our fillers use Hyaluronic acid and are FDA approved.

How long do the results last for?

It differs from person to person, but it is not unexpected to see results last for between 12-24 months.

Should I expect any discomfort? Is there any risk?

There may be a small amount of discomfort when the needle enters the skin.

There is risk of course in any procedure, but it is minimal, and we work hard to reduce the risk by ensuring that you understand the pre and post-procedure advice that should be followed.

What should I expect in terms of recovery?

Side effects tend to be minimal, but common ones can include swelling, redness and bruising.  Recovery time is usually between 48-72 hours.

What about aftercare?

This list is not exhaustive but you should avoid touching or applying make-up on the treated area for at least 48 hours post-treatment as well as smoking (24-36 hours post), alcohol (24 hours post) and exercise (24 hours post).
